CSTA Special Announcement and 2022-2023 Executive and Board of Governors Â
This is a long one - but worth the read!
Special Announcement – To the Canadian Security Traders Association Executive and Board of Governors and all Affiliate Members it is with mixed emotions that we announce, effective August 20th, 2022, Peggy Bowie has decided to fully retire. She has been the CSTA President since 2012. Peggy has been an integral part of the CSTA, as one of a few founding members in 2000. Her contributions will always be valued and remembered. Her hard work, commitment and dedication are worthy of all admiration. While we will miss Peggy tremendously, we wish her the best of luck in her next chapter.
“For me, being President of the CSTA has been an honour and a labour of love. To provide Members the opportunity to have a say in the rules that govern our industry, meet and exchange views and information with peers and regulators. And really important, education on market structure issues both here and abroad.” - Peggy Bowie
A Toast to Peggy by Doug Clark
I would like to share a few thoughts on the current CSTA President, Peggy Bowie. Peggy is far too
humble to enjoy moments like this, so I will make my remarks brief – Peggy I am sorry, but this needs to
be said.
The 2022 conference will be the last year Peggy will act as our President. She has made the decision to
finally retire, and enjoy time with the family. Peggy has been our President since 2012, and was one of a
very small number of folks that founded the CSTA in 2000. She will be greatly missed.
I was blessed with the opportunity to introduce Peggy, in 2019, when she won the Security Traders’
Association – our US Parent foundations’ – coveted Dictum Meum Pactum award. Peggy was just the
second non-American to win this award, in the STA’s 88 year history. (The first was her predecessor,
Sonny Lennon). In the lead up to that event, I sat with Peggy and asked her about her career. Peggy
started as a bond trader many years ago – no need for me to say the exact year. But when she started,
women traders were unheard of. Sadly, in those days women were not treated very well on Bay Street.
Back then when Peggy would go to a conference, she often wasn’t allowed to enter via the main doors.
Other traders, seeing a young female in attendance would assume she was part of the wait staff, or the
entertainment, rather than believe she was a trader.
But Peggy pushed through the prejudice, and misogyny. Going on to become an industry leader. She did it
by working harder, exceeding expectations, asking questions, creating strong bonds, and being reliable.
She broke glass ceilings, and set a standard – not just for young females, but for everybody.
If you had told me, in early 2020 that a Global Pandemic would largely shut down the world for 2 plus
years, and result in the CSTA having to cancel both the 2020 and 2021 in person events, I would not
have believed the organization would be able to survive the aftermath. But the organization didn’t just
survive, it thrived. Peggy, and her wonderful team, focused on the CSTA’s other work – advocacy,
education and networking. They engaged with stakeholders, and delivered value, when many such
organizations withdrew, and licked their wounds. We quickly pivoted to newer technologies, and
delivered virtual events. We found speakers that were able to speak to the unique needs of
unprecedented times, and our audience responded.
Peggy reminded all of us of the CSTA’s real mandate. To give voice to market practitioners in an effort to
shape Canadian markets for the better. To draw on the expertise of our membership, and share that
knowledge with regulators and traders. To advocate for fair and efficient markets, that work for the
institutional trading community, but are also considerate of views from exchanges, retail desks, liquidity
providers and issuers. To understand the full story, and make sure our opinions are well thought out,
and considerate of the entire ecosystem.
During her time with the CSTA, even before taking on the President’s role, Peggy has had a history of
identifying and mentoring emerging talent in our market. These young leaders have helped up to
constantly stock the shelves with new ideas, energy and perspective.
And Peggy’s influence has not just been within Canada. As mentioned earlier the STA recognized her in
2019, for her effort, including her role running the STA’s International Committee for several years.
Peggy has made countless trips to Congress, the SEC and FINRA to explain cross border trading issues,
and try to ensure more efficient trade between the two markets.
Markets are vital to any countries long term economic success. Efficient primary, and secondary markets
allow entrepreneurs to efficiently raise capital and grow our economy. Peggy’s efforts, both in industry
and within the STA / CSTA have made Canadian markets better.
Peggy, your footprint will long be seen on the CSTA, and on the careers of many folks in this room –
myself included. We owe you a huge debt and wish you all the best in your retirement.
So if we can all raise a glass, Thank you Peggy! Cheers!
